Gameday Recovery (4mod7)

For many of us, this morning was one of hardest to get out of bed post jet lag as many of our group were kept awake by the Minnesota Vikings thrilling victory against the New Orleans Saints. The issue was that game started at 10:30 Budapest time, which kept many up close to 2:30am while still being ready for a 10 o'clock math class later that morning.

Math class today was an interesting sight. Kicking off with the cries of joy from Adam, we soon entered into the inferno of modular arithmetic for another sprawling. Our adventure started in a familiar upper layer which we already cleared the day before, but with the light of conjecture, a hidden passageway was discovered. After a short walk down a hallway, we arrived into a large room and a hoard of hostiles swarmed in. We formed squads and started the fight. The enemies in question were numerous, but most would go down before we even swung, while others could take as many as 4 hits to go down. After around 20 minutes, the first wave were defeated, but we knew our weapons wouldn't hold forever. Luckily, the light of conjecture that we used to find the hidden passageway could be used to smite off the enemies that die instantly, but for the others, we need to forge new gear.

It was too late. We heard its terrifying screech as it broke though the ceiling. It was similar to the enemies we fought before, but it was much tougher than any of them. We started our fight strong, looking for any weakness in its impenetrable chassis. We were losing hope, but then, the blade of Diophantine began to glow. In its light, the fearsome beast before us looked oddly familiar. Yes, we saw this beast, or something like it, in a previous dungeon. Acting more out of muscle memory than thought, we took several swings at the beast, crippling the monster. Finally, using the great craft of modularity, we banished the fiend and left only several small trophies for our glorious victory. Triumphantly, we returned to the village to collect our quest reward.

After Math Class we made a trip to the train station keleti pályaudvar to buy tickets for our trip to Vienna. Some of us made the mistake of getting numbers before we were ready and quickly clogged up the station. With the much needed help of Bruce and Adam we finally figured out how to say "Leaving Friday"... in english. After a couple of us went on a much needed grocery store run to pick up some various liquid supplies. Mostly a Hungarian gatorade that while being blue it is advertised as lemonade and tastes like strawberries. That same group went to a small cafe near by by the name of Eat? and enjoyed some fresh grilled sandwiches. After we went back to the hotel to start our homework and begin studying for the midterm.

At 6:10 a group of 8 of us headed to the For Sale Pub to meet up with Evan Holmes, fellow St Olaf student, in order to welcome him to Budapest in preparation for his full semester abroad. The For Sale Pub was one of the more interesting restaurants that we have experienced so far in Budapest. The walls and ceilings were covered with paper placemats on which past customers had written messages, usually along the lines of “X was here 23/4/17.” The floors were covered in straw and crushed peanut shells from the buckets of peanuts at each table. We were happy to add a fresh layer. While the prices were a bit higher than we were used to, the portion size more than made up for it! Almost everyone had something to take home. Altogether it was very cozy dinner with tasty victuals and we were all well satisfied. After dinner and some conversation, we bid Evan goodnight and headed back to the hotel, remembering to stop by Molnár’s kürtőskalács for some after-dinner chimney cakes to fatten us up even more.
