Cars, Kebabs, and Common Divisors

Szia!

Today was our second day of class and our first Hungarian lesson. Many of us were very excited to finally learn how to communicate with locals without getting confused looks. As we left the hotel in the morning, we all piled onto a bus and tried to remember how to get to the school building.

Upon arrival, we met our Hungarian language instructor Erika. She taught us how to introduce ourselves, how to say what languages we speak, and how to count to 6. Anika also learned how to say, "May I pet your dog?" (Tudom petolni a kutyàdat?). After our lesson, a group of us wandered to a restaurant called Hari Kebab. We ate some gyro-type sandwiches while enthusiastically watching a women's Biathlon event on TV.

In the afternoon, we had our second math class where we learned about Greatest Common Divisors. We also came to the shocking realization that we are 10% of the way through our class! After class, a group of us were headed toward the metro to get back to the hotel. On the way, someone asked us to help push his car into the street. We were hesitant at first, but decided that it would make a good story. Just imagine 6 college students running and pushing a car down a quiet Hungarian street! Once back to the hotel, we settled in to do homework and eat some food.

Later that afternoon, Katelyn went on a professor dinner hosted by Professor Berliner and Professor Hanson along with three other students to a Hungarian and Slovakian eating establishment where they indulged in some local cuisine along with practicing some of their new Hungarian phrases (along with trying some Eros Pista, a spicy spread recommended by Professor Dietz). The event ended with very tasty chimney cakes.

Overall, this day was very fun and eventful for everyone on the trip. We can't wait to see what adventures are in store for tomorrow!

Until next time!

P.S. Anika gave all her coins to the didgeridoo man

  1. Erika has probably already told you about this, but the coffee drinkers (e.g. Anika) should check out the Goat Herder, on Istvan Utca. They too changed my life by introducing me to a cortado (they wanted to kick me out at closing time, so convinced me to order a cortado instead of a flat white because it's smaller).
